[TuneOTD] Master Shortie - GRAVITY (ft. Ed Sheeran)

Artist: Master Shortie
Genre: Funk/Hip-hop/Rap
Location: London, UK
Label Type: Indie
Record Label: Odd One Out

South London’s very own MC, Master Shortie has recently distributed his latest single, ‘Gravity’, a follow up to singles ‘Social Groups’ and ‘Always Like This’ released in the summer of this year. This is the latest material from the 22 year-old since debut album A.D.H.D. back in 2009, with all three tracks set to be make an appearance on his new mixtape produced by DJ Benzi titled ‘Studying Abroad’.

Gravity’ features Suffolk’s very own Ed Sheeran, the man who recently gate-crashed the charts with hit single ‘The A-Team’. This collaboration is an exciting link-up for the increasingly impressive founder of the Odd One Out record label, and it follows his recent link up with Bombay Bicycle Club on the track, ‘Always Like This’.

There is more of a mainstream feeling to ‘Gravity’ in comparison with the Master Shortie of two years ago. The boy from London town has grown up and moved with the times a bit more with this one. The influence of Ed Sheeran on the track has clearly contributed to this different direction with a more pop, club and dub type feel. However, Shortie’s lyrical style remains very similar to what he has always been accustomed to, and one to which the rapper has become synonymous with. The chorus is soulful and radio-friendly, and bound to fetch some serious airplay without doubt, so lookout for this one! Check it out below:

[TuneOTD] Armageddon Project - LIKE SERPENTS TEARS

Artist: Armageddon Project
Genre: Hardcore/Industrial/Techno
Location: Bologna, Italy
Label Type: Indie
Record Label: The Third Movement, Industrial Strength
Facebookhttp://www.facebook.com/Armageddon-Project

MySpacehttp://www.myspace.com/thearmageddonproject

Today’s tune is what I like to call a “marmite” song; you’re either going to love it or hate it. The title is 'Like Serpents Tears', produced by Armageddon Project, and taken from their 2011 three-track offering, No Hell No Dignity

The song is what can be described as five and a half minutes of pure ground-stomping industrial hardcore. The song is a simple fusion of the individual sounds produced by the shaven-headed Italian duo. It’s all done on their own software and extraordinarily no use of synthesisers despite the techno influenced presence. Like Serprents Tears is a demonstration of the radical evolution of hardcore music with a deep thumping bass and high-pitched beats.

Stefano Croce and Matteo Delgrano have been making music together since their first release in 1997, and with this release it’s easy to see why they have been making such a splash in the hardcore scene all across Europe. This track is proper dark, give it a listen and see if it floats your boat! If you like it, you’ll be addicted, if not, you probably won’t last much longer than about 30 seconds.

[TuneOTD] Vampiro - PHANTOM

Artist: Vampiro
Genre: Dubstep
Location: Cape Town, South Africa
Label Type: Indie
Record Label: DLA Black
Twitterhttp://twitter.com/itsVampiro
YouTubehttp://www.youtube.com/VampiroTV

Phantom’ is the new release from South African dubstep producer Vampiro. He has followed the lead set by such acts as Nero in employing female vocals in the form of Anja van der Spuy (even if this is just sampled noises rather than singing).

The tune is contemporary yet simple, generic yet effective. The beginning strikes similar resemblances to early Crystal Castles, up until the cut-throat bass drops in. The pace is stepped up a bit around half way through as an eclectic drop is nailed. However, it subsequently doesn’t deliver as much as is promised. Perhaps more variety and experimentation could be added, but perfection comes with experience, and the early signs are there for Vampiro, such as mastering the dubstep beat and raving capabilities. These comments can be generalised also to an earlier distributed track, ‘Haunter’, although this particular tune probably takes greater direction in using the synths.

The foundations are most certainly there, with definitive influences from Skrillex. And so if filthy, face-melting dubstep is your thing, then you just might like this. Check it out!

[TuneOTD] Everybody Looks Famous - SPOTLIGHTS

Artist: Everybody Looks Famous
Genre: Powerpop/Rock
Location: Birmingham, Midlands, UK
Label Type: Major
Record Label: Go Faster Music Management

Today’s tune is from a young band we’ve featured before here on Twitter Tunez, called Everybody Looks Famous. Their new single ‘Spotlights’ follows the trend set by earlier tracks in that it again offers something a little different, building on from their previous efforts.

The song is instigated by a fine display of synths which continue throughout supporting the infectious and penetrative drums and driving guitars. The angelic vocals of Lexi Pretorius are a breath of fresh air and are not to dissimilar in fashion to one Ellie Goulding! As far as the chorus goes, these vocals very much hold their own over the wave of guitars, bass and hammered cymbals. The track also includes a short, steady guitar riff in the build-up to the coda and subsequent crescendo.

All in all, a top-notch effort in which the beat provided by the synths stand-out as a successful piece of innovation, culminating in possibly the bands greatest track to date.

I'll let the band introduce the song themselves:

[TuneOTD] Steal The Scenery - MONSTER

Artist: Steal The Scenery
Genre: Dub/Pop/Rock
Location: San Diego, California. US
Label Type: Indie
Record Label: Emeral Grand Records

From San Diego, California come Steal The Scenery with their new single, ‘Monster’. This is the first track from their sophomore album ‘The Art of Breaking Hearts’, the follow up to 2010’s debut album, ‘All Or Nothing’.

The single demonstrates the diverse array of musical tastes that have influenced the band and their musical style. You can pick-up the inspirations from a pop-punk background as well as sways from a more dance scene. The tune is certainly creative and catchy with separate input from all angles of the band complimenting the soft pop vocals of lead singer, Bobby Frausto. This is also in addition to a hard-hitting beat incorporating disco-dubstep splodges and switch-ups.

From a purely lyrical point of view, the Monster in this aspect is referred to as being that past relationship partner who is regarded as somewhat a manipulator at times, whilst also attaining that attributes of that loving, caring kind. The twist with this song is that it is written from the perspective of the monster, rather than the expected perspective of the analyser and ex-partner of the monster.

Check ‘Monster’ out a lyrical video for the tune below:

[TuneOTD] Scroobius Pip - INTRODICTION

Artist: Scroobius Pip
GenreA'cappella/Hip Hop
Location: Stanford-le-Hope, Essex. UK.
Label Type: Indie
Record Label: Speech Development/Sunday Best/Strange Famous

'Introdiction' is the introduction to Scroobius Pip’s forthcoming solo album. The title is a play on words of diction and obviously introduction, released as a teaser for the album titled ‘Distraction Pieces’. Even though this song lacks the presence of partner in crime Dan le Sac, there are backing vocals provided by Resident Evil’s Milla Jovovich.

As expected the tune is filled with fantastic lyrics, an attribute synonymous with the man from Millwall. Just one example of this is "you see a mousetrap, I see free cheese and a fucking challenge", lyrical genius. What really sets this guy apart from the rest though is the fact that the lyrics are coupled with a real passionate heartfelt delivery. In addition, the “flow” suits this song down to a tee, even if it was stolen from Tyler, The Creator amongst others. Pip has produced a work of art with this one, and this is only the introduction! The one downside is that the world has to wait until September 19th to hear the album released on Speech Development.

The video for the song contains Pip burning a poem, trimming his beard, shaving his hair, burning a map of the world with an angry mob style torch of a horse’s head, and all in the confined space of tiny room reminiscent of a wooden cabin, and on a budget of £100. You can check out this intense and spectacular video below:

[ArtistOTD] Trace of Lords

Artist: Trace of Lords
Genre: Heavy Metal
Location: Örnsköldsvik, Västernorrlands län,  Sweden
Label Type:
 Unsigned

Today's Artist of the Day is a little known, Swedish band, Trace of Lords. With only a few songs posted on Youtube and an old, derelict myspace page, Trace of Lords are one of the most mysterious bands we've ever featured here on twittertunez. We don't know their names, how old they are or any other of those devoid, meaningless facts that these reviews are usually chucked full of!

But despite their elusiveness, their song, 'Story of my Life' is played regularly on Sweden's One Eleven Radio (well it's been played at least once). It's a classic piece of Swedish heavy metal, reminiscent of Power Metal giants Dream Evil and close, personal friends of mine, Wolf. Much like Dream Evil, Trace of Lords don't seem to take themselves too seriously with nonsense lyrics appearing throughout their music. The exception to this is their song, 'Leave Me in Silence', which tackles the chilling issue of child abuse. Unlike their countrymen Dream Evil, they achieve a lighter sound with catchy choruses which are bound to get stuck on your head, whether you like it or not!

Musically, they offer a surprisingly well produced sound for such a relatively unknown, unsigned band. Melodic riffs and tempo changes throughout ensure that Trace of Lords stamp their own unique identity onto their music. The song 'Bullet' provides the best example of this with Guitarist “No Name” (Thats what I'm gonna call him) producing a brief but tantalising solo towards the end of the song.

Overall, Trace of Lords may never hit the big time, but they're well worth a listen. Enjoy!

[TuneOTD] Matt Nash - INVINCIBLE

Artist: Matt Nash
Genre: House/Pop/Electro
Location: London, England. UK
Label Type: Indie
Record Label: Super Massive Records

Today’s tune is the song from 19 year-old pop sensation Matt Nash titled ‘Invincible’. He used to make music under the name MyToyBox, but with a fresh new name he has burst back on the scene under the guidance of record label, Super Massive Records.

Invincible’ is Matt’s debut track and is one which would fit right in at the biggest clubs on Friday and Saturday nights up and down the country. The dynamics on this one are spot on whilst its main trait is an orgasmic breakdown to a razor-like beat. The beat is exactly the type of sound which his hitting all the right notes for today’s audience. Keeping up with the times and still keeping things fresh and original is what makes a song a real winner in the club scene in this day and age, and this is a banger which does exactly that. The synths are sublime and the vocals are perfect for an electro-pop track of this ilk. Matt Nash has smashed it with this one folks!

With enough exposure this track has the ingredients to become THE club track in the summer of 2011. Coming to a dancefloor near you!

The online exclusive of Matt Nash’s ‘Invincible’ from the upcoming album, ‘Pop Filth’ can be heard here. Enjoy!
