[ArtistOTD] Hearts Under Fire

Artist: Hearts Under Fire
Genre: Punk/Rock
Location: Surrey, England, UK
Label Type: Major
Record Label: My Major Company

All-female punk rockers, Hearts Under Fire currently consist of members Mary O’ Regan, Lexi Clark, Nicky Day and the newly appointed Kat Upton. Since their formation in 2005, the band has undergone multiple line-up changes, proving to be quite unsettling. As mentioned just now, the new member of the group is Kat Upton; she replaces the recently departed lead guitarist Steph Farrow. Rhythm guitarist Nicky Day is another who wasn’t in the original line-up, but one person who was, is former lead singer Sian Sanderson. She has since left the band, meaning that as well as change in personnel, the girls have also had to shift around the roles within the band, and so Mary O’ Regan was elected to fill the void left by Sanderson and become the new lead vocalist. Aside from performing the vocal duties, O’ Regan is also the band's bassist, a combination quite unusual to see in the music industry. In terms of backing vocals, the whole band have tended contribute in the past, and it will be interesting to see if this trend continues in catering for the introduction of Upton.

Their music style seems to revolve around melodies on a hard rock base, a brand which has become more prominent and evident in the last year or two, and in particular since the changing of lead vocalists. As a broad genre, you would place HUF in the punk rock bracket, but you could also be excused for describing them as pop-punk. The quartet prides themselves on their passion and hard work, whilst providing plenty of guts and determination. Their gang vocals set them apart from most bands, as does their unrivalled energy, particularly so in the case of drummer, Lexi Clark. Moreover, their tempo in general takes a pretty fast pace whilst they also incorporate hard-rocking driving guitar riffs exemplified by their rawness and honest approach. HUF’s music clearly portrays a diverse array of influences, an attribute which has seen them perform in such festivals as Sonisphere, Download and T in the Park amongst others.

With regards to the bands discography, their only release to date is the EP titled, Letters, which came out in May last year.

Undoubtedly their best track is the 2nd of the 4 track offering, ‘It’s Not Me, It’s You’. As well as being a red-head front woman of a punk rock band, O’ Regan’s vocals also draw comparisons to the magnificent Hayley Williams. Her vocals demonstrate a key component of HUF in the form of passion, while the backing vocals from the rest of the gang give it that support, with the two approaches complimenting each other well. The song itself follows a basic punk rock structure with a catchy chorus executed quite superbly with the drums providing a characteristic upbeat  tempo. The melody and energy are evident throughout, and all in all it makes for a really top notch punk rock song.

Possibly the next best track on the record is ‘Animals’, with its catchy melodies and quick tempos backed up by plenty of guile and vigour. However, this song, and indeed the other two on the record, ‘Liquid Luck’  and ‘Light My Way’,  are not as well executed as the previously mentioned ‘It’s Not Me, It’s You’, as they simply possess generic punk rock sounds and structures.

All things considered, the pace and power on this record are balanced well, but perhaps the aggression evident on occasions could come to the forefront a little more, as well as the distinctive gang vocals. On a positive note, ‘It’s Not Me, It’s You’ really is one of my favourite punk rock songs of the modern era and the EP should be recognised for this brilliance.

Of late, the band has gone for a slight change of direction and has tweaked the sound a little bit. If they continue this good work and keep to a consistent line-up providing some stability, then by simply just developing on the good foundations they have already established, they could quite possibly experience a successful future in the music industry.

The band are currently shooting a video for ‘Liquid Luck’ as well as working on their debut album, and will be playing four UK shows supporting My Passion towards the end of this month. So if you can, check them out, and/or even invest in them by clicking here. In the meantime this is the video for the majestic, ‘It’s Not Me, It’s You'.

[TuneOTD] The Riot Tapes – PHOTOGRAPH

Artist: The Riot Tapes
Genre: Indie/ Alternative/ Power Pop
Location: Dublin, Ireland
Label Type: Indie
Record Label: Mostar Records

'Photograph' is the debut single from Dublin based indie rockers The Riot Tapes. Formed in 2009 the band are currently in the process of recording their debut album. Photograph is a classic slice of indie pop rock pie, with positive nods to The Pretenders and Blondie. Opening with a steady drum beat and an contagious guitar riff, Photograph reaches a crescendo with an emotionally charged chorus. The music sparkles, but it is the luscious vocals of singer Elaine Doyle that sends Photograph into orbit. The Riot Tapes have received plenty of attention over in Ireland having been labelled as one of the “Irish Sounds of 2011” and are ready to launch an assault on the UK charts. Photograph is a perfect pop gem and there can be no doubt that The Riot Tapes have a bright future ahead of them.
Photograph is out now on Mostar Records, and you can check out the video for the single below:

[TuneOTD] Taking Back Sunday - EL PASO

Artist: Taking Back Sunday
Genre: Rock
Location: Long Island, New York, USA
Label Type: Major
Record Label: Warner Bros

The forthcoming album from American rockers Taking Back Sunday sees the return of former members John Nolan (lead guitar/vocals) and Shaun Cooper (bass). While Adam Lazzara (vocals), Eddie Reyes (rhythm guitar) and Mark O’ Connell (drums) have been constant members since the bands formation in 1999, past members have come and gone, but now they return to the line-up of their first studio album ‘Tell All Your Friends’ in 2002. The new self-titled album is to be the bands 5th to date and the highly anticipated follow up to 2009’s ‘New Again’, provisionally set for release in the summer of this year, with June 28th rumoured to be the specific date.

El Paso’ is the first song off the new record after it was announced on their website along with a superbly innovative video back in late March. The video displays a mixture of lyrics from the song and tweets from the bands fans off social networking site, Twitter, expressing their excitement and anticipation about the upcoming album. The title of the song has nothing to do with the actual lyrics of the song, but is given the name because the band were in El Paso, Texas when writing this song.

As for the song itself, quite frankly it fails to match the imagination demonstrated in the video. The chorus line ‘You’ll never give what you get’ is ferociously repeated throughout with real passion and hunger, but this only serves to fill the emptiness the song would be left with otherwise. Whilst it lacks the dual vocals and melodies of previous TBS hits, it is probably the heaviest rock song that I can ever remember the band doing, and a possible indication into the direction the Long-Islanders are heading in. However, it could quite possibly indicate a return to their ''emo'' days of the early naughties when they enjoyed their most successful period. Back then the band members were in their late-teens/early twenties, so if they are indeed returning to these musical roots, hopefully they have picked up many different aspects on their musical journey since then and can add these to produce a mature version of the brilliant TBS of old.

The song is a decent start to the bands new era, nothing more, nothing less. However, they’ll have to do a lot better if they want the new album to hit the heights of ‘Louder Now’ (2006) or ‘Where You Want To Be’ (2004). One saving grace may well be the fact that the producer of the new album, Eric Valentine, is the same man who produced ‘Louder Now’, so here’s hoping he can help the band release something as good as that!

You can see the video for ‘El Paso’ below and you can also check out TBS when they begin their UK tour May 9th as well as on the main stage at Reading and Leeds this summer.

[ArtistOTD] TC4

Artist: TC4
Genre: Experimental/Dubstep/Grime
Location: Dudley, Birmingham, UK
Label Type: Unsigned

TC4 are a self-proclaimed programming/production duo consisting of Tom Calder and Kate Turley, hailing from the Midlands. The pair, who formed last year, tend to make their own beats as well as carrying out remixes and samples. Drummer Kate provides energy and vigour in abundance illustrated by some live drum performances that you can check out on their YouTube channel.

Their best song is undoubtedly ‘Exit’, an example of a masterfully constructed dubstep tune. If this song was released by a top famous artist, it would be a world beater for sure. It really is that good! The male and female vocals complement each other superbly, while the heavy drops are timed to perfection.

Probably the bands best remix, is their dubstep version of Ellie Goulding’s ‘The Writer’. The build up to the drop is so intense while the drop itself portrays the razor like sound that you can hear in most TC4 tracks. They have also managed to pick and choose parts of the vocals cunningly and reproduce them accordingly. Moreover, their dub mix of Heart's Under Fire’s ‘It’s Not Me, It’s You’ is another one to take note of.

In addition, the twosome have since recorded a sick dubstep remix of Rage Against The Machine’s ‘Testify’, and an equally dope remix of Chiddy Bang’s ‘Truth’. This as well as their experimental remixes of such artists as Bomma B, Mr Vegas, Slick Don, Trilla, and Movez.

A collaboration that also deserves a mention is the jungle style ‘Babylon Warrior’ ft. Slam Coke. This creates a mash-up between grimy dub beats and reggae vocals.

However, away from their re-mastering, the band’s early songs are short and sharp providing in your face grime. Personally, I would love to see them go back to these roots as they give the band more personality and character. Recently they seem to have focussed more on mixing songs from other artists. Even though these are carried out well, it would also be good to see more of their own stuff again like ‘Hardbass’ ‘Drought’ ‘Reflex’ and ‘Dubchant’.

Feel free to check some of their songs for yourselves and see what you think!
